Biodiesel is an alternative to diesel petroleum that is typically made from vegetable oils or animal fats. Biodiesel can be blended with petroleum diesel and used in any diesel engine without modification. Using biodiesel reduces particulate matter, carbon monoxide and hydro carbons, which helps reduce the amount of vehicle emissions produced in the state of Illinois.
Illinois has been one of the nation's leaders in alternative fuels for many years. Throughout the state, biodiesel use is on the rise. Furthermore, over 180 million gallons of biodiesel are produced in the state from Illinois-grown feed stocks. Most Illinois citizens with diesel engines can now fill up with biodiesel blends of up to 11% (or higher) at most Illinois refueling stations.
